Train to Adulthood
Screening of a documentary
Far from the turmoil of modern Hungary, three youngsters work on the Budapest Children’s Railway.
It all began in 1948 when communist leaders erected a small railway to be run entirely by children. Today, around 500 teenagers still work there in exchange for an unforgettable experience. Three youngsters, for whom the train has become an escape from life’s ordeals, a place of friendship and order, a place that stands in contrast to the chaos in society outside, find themselves at the center of attention. The train becomes a metaphor for discussing modern-day Hungary, and offers insights into the thoughts and feelings of a young generation which will soon be responsible for the fate of all of us.
